A suite of Louis XVI white-painted and parcel-gilt seat furniture circa 1780, stamped G. Iacob

comprising a pair of bergères and four fauteuils à la reine; each with a rectangular upholstered backrest with curved top rail, downswept padded armrests carved with acanthus leaves, the slightly bow-fronted upholstered seat raised on spirally fluted tapered legs headed by rosettes; the whole carved with overlapping imbricated discs and twisted ribbon; upholstered in green silk.  6 pieces.

A comparable chair which has the same unusual top rail with scrolled ears, stamped Jacob, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Blumenthal bequest, illustrated, P. Verlet, Les Ebénistes du XVIII siècle Français, Hachette, 1963, p. 231, pl. 4; as noted by Verlet, Jacob continued to be innovative throughout his career, constantly creating new designs, all of which found a ready market in fashion-conscious Paris.
