Roger Vandercruse, called Lacroix (1728-1799) was received maître in 1755 and was responsible for the production of a large number of small tables comparable to the present lot. RVLC was related by marriage to Jean-François Oeben for whom, at one time, he worked, and to Jean-Henri Riesener, who took over Oeben's workshop after his death. Both RVLC and Riesener perfected the execution of trellis parquetry, including the type present on the offered lot.
The majority of RVLC's iconoclastic oval tables are constructed with cabriole legs joined by a stretcher. There are also a few examples, stamped by him, constructed with slender rectangular supports above the stretcher and cabriole legs below. These include one sold at Christie's, London, December 9, 1982, lot 49; another was sold, Sotheby's, New York, November 17, 1984, lot 268; a third attributed to RVLC was sold from the Alexander Collection, Christie's, New York, April 30, 1999, lot 90. A circular table en chiffonnière of comparable design with rectangular supports above the stretcher and cabriole legs below, stamped RVLC was sold, Christie's, New York, May 23, 1993, lot 74.
