COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
M. Jules Badin, La Manufacture de Tapisseries de Beauvais, Paris 1909.
The two present compositions are derived from designs by Jean-Baptiste Oudry (Paris 1686 - 1755 Beauvais). A painter at the Versailles court of Louis XV, Oudry was well known for his pastoral scenes and, in particular, his renderings of animals. He was appointed director of the Beauvais manufactory in 1734 and then further extended his influence in the decorative arts as director of the Gobelins manufactory.
The present pair of weavings came from his series of La Fontaine, first woven at Beauvais in 1736. The second weaving is probably a synthesis of two stories: Le Deux Chèvres and Le Cheval et Le Loup.
The presence of the Royal arms indicates that these weavings were probably a gift from the crown. However, the documentation is insufficient in providing the name of the recipient of the gift.
