Description

  • height 47 1/4 in.; width 31 1/2 in.; length 72 in.
  • 120 cm; 80 cm; 183 cm
the pierced arched backrest carved with acanthus leaves and C-scrolls linked by floral garlands, centering a monogram,  the rectangular frame carved with foliate motifs and strapwork, raised on tapered supports joined by leaf-carved S-stretchers.

Catalogue Note

Very few daybeds of the Louis XIV period have survived.  A small number have been recorded including a comparable example with an arched backrest centering a monogram, sold from the collections of Baron de Redé and Baron Guy de Rothschild, Sotheby's, Monaco, May 25-26, 1975, lot 302.  A second comparable daybed formerly in the collection of Jacques Garcia was sold, Sotheby's, New York, October 27, 1990, lot 77.  A third example, formerly in the collection of Madame Lopez-Willshaw had been exhibited in the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, 1960, 'Louis XIV Faste et Décor, no. 4; it was sold, Sotheby's, Monaco, May 26-27, 1980, lot 612.  A fourth example, lacking its headboard, is in the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, illustrated, Molesworth & Kenworthy-Browne, Three Centuries of Furniture, New York, 1972, p. 62, pl. 86.
