Description
- overall height 21 1/2 in.
- 54 cm
each rectangular board divided into 20 squares painted with four of the first twelve Roman emperors, mythological subjects, contemporary figures at various pursuits, ruins, animals and birds and quotes of Italian (largely Roman) paintings including subjects by Carracci and Guido Reni; within gilt borders; each with numbered serpentine top rail and now contained within a three-quarter ormolu frame numbered to match, and fitted to a revolving circular standard with pine cone finial above a circular fluted socle cast with leaf tips and guilloche above a fluted bleu turquin pedestal with acanthus leaf-cast ormolu border and a square rouge royal marble base.

Catalogue Note
The present lot can be compared with a set of ten boards, signed by the draftsman and printmaker Jean Mondon (Sotheby's, New York, November 20, 1993, lot 111). These boards were painted with a variety of coats-of-arms, and were stamped on the reverse with the Royal arms of France.
