Catalogue Note
Marcel Vertès (1895-1961) was a French artist and costume designer. Over the course of his varied career, he worked for Vanity Fair in New York, illustrated books by Colette and Zola, did illustrations for "Shocking", the Schiaparelli perfume and was nominated for an Academy Award for the costumes for Moulin Rouge in 1952. His illustrations of the beau mode were droll and amusing and they were widely collected.
