The watercolor depicts the Gothic Octagon created by the Hon. Charles Hailton in 1775 for his extensive landscape garden at Pain's Hill in Surrey. Hamilton was a noted amateur of the Picturesque and modeled his landscape garden after the Italianate images found in the paintings of Poussin.
