In 1923 Koppitz undertook a series of movement and figure studies that would culminate in his famous 'Bewegungsstudie'  (see Lot 103). The image offered here is one of the first in which he explored the compositional possibilities of stylized models in a studio setting.  As in 'Bewegungsstudie,' the subjects are contingent upon each other for balance, while distanced from each other emotionally.
