Catalogue Note
Bruguière, best known for his 'light abstractions', also experimented in the 1920s with multiple exposures. He used the technique to create (what James L. Enyeart has called) 'a series of surreal images making up a still-photo scenario for a film he hoped to produce, to be called The Way'. (James L. Enyeart, Bruguière: His Photographs and His Life, 1977, quoted in Witkin, L. & London, B., 1979, p. 99.) This print bears strong stylistic similarities with other recorded studies for The Way; see, for example, Sotheby's New York, 2nd October 1996, lot 274.
