Images from the negatives taken by Brandt in Connemara were originally published in the March 1947 issue of Lilliput under the title 'The beauty and sadness of Connemara'. This was the first time that pictures by Brandt were published with a commentary written by the photographer; Lilliput, vol. 20, no. 3 (March 1947), pp. 265-276.

Catalogue Note

One print in this lot is a duplicate of the illustrated image. For another print of the unillustrated image, see Sotheby's London, 8th July 2004, lot 419.

The prints in this lot were reference material for the 'Book of Kells' exhibition held at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 1961. Large scale details from the manuscript were punctuated by Brandt images blown up to provide a continuous landscape evoking the atmosphere of ancient Ireland.
