In her discussion of the significance of Greyfriars' Churchyard in relation to the work of Hill and Adamson (2002, pp. 154-5), Sara Stevenson tells us that the pair made 'at least' six calotypes of the Nasmyth memorial. She continues: 'Probably the most significant shows Thomas Duncan [the artist], sitting pointing to an inscription while Hill listens, sketchbook in hand...The tomb commemorated the ancestors of Alexander Nasmyth, who was the friend and teacher of both Duncan and Hill and who had died in 1840.'; (p. 154).
