Catalogue Note

This large bas-relief by French sculptor Pierre Puget was commissioned by Louis XIV circa 1670 and completed in 1689.  It was moved to the antique room in the Louvre in 1697 before eventually being acquired by the museum, as part of the royal collections, in 1833.
