Catalogue Note

When the painting was offered at auction in 1999 it was erroneously identified as one of a pair of paintings formerly in the collection of the painter Joseph-Marie Vien (1716-1809), published by Ingersoll-Smouse (Joseph Vernet, Paris 1926, vol. I, p. 75, cat. no. 530) and sold in Vien's sale, Paris, A. Paillet, 17 May 1809, lot 26.
