Follower of Hans Memling

The composition originally derives from Rogier van der Weyden's composition listed by Destrée as in the Renders Collection, Bruges (see J. Destrée, Roger de la Pasture van der Weyden, Brussels 1930, vol. II reproduced plate 37). The present picture however is directly based on Hans Memling's free treatment of the subject in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio (see M.J. Friedlander, Early Netherlandish Painting, Leyden 1971, vol. VI p. 109, cat. no. supp. 226, reproduced plate 231).
