Circle of Jean Tassel

The stylistic qualites of the present painting recall those of the Bamboccianti, a group of Dutch and Flemish artists resident Rome in the 17th century, with whom Tassel spent much time, and was strongly influenced by, during his sojourn in Rome from 1634.  Five versions of this subject by Tassel are recorded: Paris, collection Heim; Avignon, private collection; Godewaersvelde, Abbaye Sainte-Marie-du-Mont; Langres, Musée; Karlsruhe, Staatliche Kunsthalle.
