After Jan Fyt

The composition follows a design by Fyt, the original of which is now lost but which is known through several early replicas. The best of these are those sold Rome, Finarte, 23 May 1989, lot 185 (dated 1661), that in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Braunschweig, and that sold New York, Sothebys, 5 April 1990, lot 314. Another copy, formerly in the collections of the Princes of Arenberg, was sold in these Rooms, 17 December 1998, lot 133 for £10,000.
