Catalogue Note

Supposedly self-taught, Seybold began his career as a portrait painter in the formal Baroque style before falling under the influence of Balthasar Denner whose genre figures and realistic depictions of men and women lured Seybold into painting with greater sensitivity.  As exemplified by the present works, Christian Seybold imbued his portraits of both himself and others with a deep sense of honesty and realism, setting himself apart from his peers elsewhere in Europe, and gaining himself the position of Court Painter at both the Imperial and Saxon courts.
