Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Mr. Eddy Schavemaker for endorsing the attribution to Eglon van der Neer on the basis of a transparency; the present work will be included in his forthcoming monograph on the artist.  Mr. Schavemaker believes the present work to have indeed been executed in 1691 as it coincides with other representations by the artist of Mary Magdalene from the same period.
