In broad outline, this composition originates with Pieter Bruegel the Elder, but was probably known to subsequent generations of painters through Pieter van der Heyden's engraving, from parts of which elements of the present composition derive.  Paintings like this one, of wide format and with strong red colours, have traditionally been associated with Maerten van Cleve and his Workshop.
