Benedetto di Bindo

Benedetto di Bindo was a prominent artist in early quattrocento Siena much of whose output was for the decoration of the Siena cathedral.  He is first recorded  in November of 1409, when he was paid (along with Andrea di Bartolo) for the polychroming of wooden statues of the city's patron saints.  The next year he was charged with the fresco decoration of the three chapels in the sacristy, the project around which the bulk of his work has been grouped.  His personality had been confused with Gualtieri di Giovanni and Giovanni di Bindino whose names had appeared in the documents relating to the commission (collectively the "Masters of the Siena Cathedral Sacristy"), but his status as the master of the project has been convincingly clarified by Jacqueline Mongellaz (see "Reconsideration de la distribution des roles a l'interieur du groupe des Maitres de la Sacristie de la Cathedrale de Sienne," Paragone, xxxvi/2, 1985, pp. 73-89).
