Catalogue Note

It has been suggested, based on style and measurements, that the present Diana at the Hunt may be part of a series of paintings by an as yet unidentified artist working in the ambient of Laurent de la Hyre.  This series, which includes three paintings depicting Diana Hunting: [The Kill (164 by 180 cm. Musée de Tessé, Le Mans), The Spoils (116 by 182 cm. private collection, London) and The Return from the Hunt (116 by 172 cm. private collection, Lyon)], was formerly given to La Hyre (see P. Rosenberg, Laurent De La Hyre 1606-1656, L'homme et l'oeuvre, exhibition catalogue, Geneva 1988, under rejected works, pp. 361 & 362, nos. RP10-12).

In addition, two other paintings, Cephalus rescued by Diana and Cephalus and Procris (see P. Bassani Pacht, Marie de Médicis : un gouvernement par les arts , catalogue of the exhibition, Château de Blois 2003-2004, pp. 205-206, cat. nos. 74 and 75) have been identified as being by the same hand as the present painting but not necessarily part of the Diana series.
