Catalogue Note

This devotional image is of the type produced within the workshop of Luis de Morales in Badajoz during the second half of the 16th century.  The iconography of the Pieta enjoyed strong demand in Spain during the period of the Counter Reformation and was one of the subjects of the Passion most frequently treated by Luis de Morales and his studio. The artist and his studio painted a number of variants of the theme.  A very similar treatment by Morales is in the Leeds Museum of Art.
