The artist, a Dutch painter and draughtsman was active both in Holland and in England at the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. He was a pupil of Pieter de Grebber and spent short amounts of time in Italy, The Hague and  Weesp. The artist's works consist primarily of scenes of the temptation of St. Anthony, witchcraft, drinking bouts, satirical themes and depictions of Quakers. Van Heemskerk had one son who also practiced briefly as a painter, but eventually focused his energies on acting instead.
