Catalogue Note
Richter received his early artistic training in Stockholm under the supervision of his brother David, who was a miniaturist. However, by 1717 the artist was in Venice as two signed and dated works can attest to this fact: a View of the Piazza San Marco and a View of the Grand Canal near Saint Lucia (O. Siren collection, Stockholm). Once in Venice his style approached that of Luca Carlevarijs. Richter remained in Venice for the remainder of his life.
The view depicted here is of the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore built by the Veneto's most influential architect, Andrea Palladio.
