Description

  • Cornelis Kruys
  • A gilt cup and cover, an overturned pewter jug, fruit, a ham on a pewter plate, three berkmeyer glasses on a pewter plate, a salt, a porcelain mustard pot, a knife and a partly peeled lemon on a partly draped table.

Catalogue Note

Kruys rarely signed his works, however, he did use the device of a X--Kruis being the Dutch word for Cross.

We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague who, based on images, confirmed the attribution to Kruys and has suggested that the fruit  in the present painting may be by Roelof Koets.

The motif of three berkemeyer glasses on a pewter plate was frequently used by Pieter Claesz (see N.R.A. Vroom, A Modest Message, vol. II, 1980, nos. 125 and 153).
