Catalogue Note

The present work dates from the period around Giordano's return to Naples in 1653. It belongs to a group of canvases, many of the same distinctive dimensions, all of which show very clearly the influence of Ribera. Good examples of this group are Lot and His Daughters and St. Sebastian, both in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden, and the Death of Seneca in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.
