Catalogue Note
Andrea was the son of the painter Bartolo di Fredi, from whom he takes his name ("di Bartolo"). By 1389 he was an independent painter for he is first recorded in that year, painting an altarpiece in collaboration with his father and Luca di Tommè for the Cappella dei Calzolari in the Duomo in Siena.
This painting by Andrea di Bartolo probably once formed part of the upper register of a larger polyptych, from which a companion panel representing Saint Ambrose Sansedoni also survives (Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, inv. no. 3126).
