Catalogue Note

The bridge in the landscape background would appear to be a capriccio view of the Ponte Milvio outside Rome.

Zocchi began his studies in Florence under the guidance of Marchese Andrea Gerini.  Gerini sent the young artist to Rome, Bologna, Milan and Venice to study works by the great masters.  Among his many accomplishments, Zocchi etched views of Florence and its surroundings.

From 1754 to 1760 Zocchi was appointed pittore by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence.  In this role he produced paintings that would be used by the factory as modellos for mosaics.  During this time he executed several models for a commission from Francis of Habsburg-Lorraine, Grand Duke of Tuscany.  The finished mosaics are in the imperial residence, Vienna and the models are in the Museo dell' Opificio Pietre Dure, Florence.
