Flemish School, 17th Century

The subject is taken from ancient history (Herodotus, 1:32) and the painting shows Croesus, the king of Lydia, in his palace, dressed in royal robes and wearing a turban, indicating a heap of golden vessels and other riches. Croesus supposed himself to be a blessed man and was surprised when, having asked the Athenian sage Solon if he had ever seen anyone happier than he, the latter admonished him, telling him that the humble when blessed with good fortune were happier than Croesus with all his wealth.

The painting would appear to be the collaboration between two different painters: one for the figures and one for the still life elements.
