Lucas van Uden Antwerp 1595 - 1672

The depiction in the present painting of the magnificence and monumentality of nature is a quality rarely found within Lucas van Uden's oeuvre and one that he learnt from the first generation of Flemish landscapists such as Joos de Momper (a comparison between the treatment of the extensive rockface in this picture and that in the work by Joos de Momper, lot 109, amply demonstrates this point).  More characteristic of his work are compositions of a less imposing, more peaceful nature (see, for example, lot 107). 

The same landscape occurs in a painting by Van Uden in the Schönborn collection at Pommersfelden (signed, on panel, 63 by 81 cm.), in which a Rest on the Flight into Egypt is depicted in the lower left corner (fig. 1).
