Catalogue Note

This landscape relates closely to an unpublished painting by Jan Brueghel the Elder, signed and dated 1609, listed by Ertz as with Noortman & Brod Gallery in 1982, which is also known through a replica given by Ertz to Jan Brueghel the Younger, formerly with the same owners (see K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel the Younger, vol. I, Freren 1984, pp. 211-2, no. 30, reproduced). The staffage in the present work differs entirely from these versions, however, and its dating to 1608, a year before the Jan Brueghel the Elder, suggests that a direct prototype by the father was painted at around that time or a little earlier.
