Catalogue Note
This is a version of a composition which the artist repeated on many occasions, and is thus one he must have considered especially successful. Indeed, the present work relates very closely to one by the artist now in London, Tate Gallery, of approximately the same size, which includes a similar atlas and leaflet. A painting of extremely similar composition to the present work was sold New York, Sotheby's, 27 January 2005, lot 136, for $140,000.
