Catalogue Note
Though not known to Dr. Alexander Wied at the time of writing his monograph on Lucas and Marten van Valckenborch, Dr. Wied has more recently tentatively endorsed the attribution to Lucas van Valckenborch on the basis of photographs and a colour transparency (written communication, 28 February and 16 April 2005). Dr. Wied plans to publish the present work in a forthcoming article on the works of Lucas and Marten van Valckenborch (see Literature below). The iron foundry is a motif which recurs in a number of works by the artist, including a panel also formerly in the Perman collection in Stockholm (for which see A. Wied, Lucas und Marten van Valckenborch, 1990, p. 162, cat. no. 56, reproduced).
