Catalogue Note
Hans Schöpfer trained in Munich, where he remained all his life, being elected leader of the painter's guild in 1538, the year in which this pair of portraits was painted. Although he was active at the Court of Duke William IV, painting numerous Wittelsbach portraits, he clearly had an active practice painting portraits of the merchant classes, of which these are typical examples.
The attribution to Schöpfer was first made by Max J. Friedländer in the Charpentier auction catalogue in 1935. In his article and subsequent monograph on the artist, Kurt Löcher discussed them in greater depth on the basis of old photographs. We are grateful to him for confirming the attribution on the basis of recent colour photographs.
