Much of Cabel's work consists of pictures of broadly similar compositional types, subjects and palette; thus his work is usually instantly recognisable. The present composition is very similar to that of another: an unsigned picture which was formerly in the Henle collection, sold London, Sotheby's, 3 December 1997, lot 17, for £85,000 (the present picture is referred to in the catalogue entry). The copper support of the present work is very unusual for Cabel, and indeed for any landscape painter working in the Northern Netherlands at this early date, although Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634), Cabel's exact contemporary, and an artist whose work invites comparison with his, painted on copper supports occasionally.
Arent Arentsz. was nicknamed Cabel after the name of his house on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam.
