Catalogue Note
The motive with the gentleman on the right with a table and a candlestick is derived from two paintings by Ter Borch: with hat, in The Duet of circa 1667/8 in the National Gallery, London (inv. no. 864; see S.J. Gudlaugsson, Gerard Ter Borch, The Hague 1959-60, vol. II, pp. 201-2, no. 220, reproduced) and without the hat, in House Music of circa 1672, in the Gemäldegalerie, Kassel (inv. no. 288; see S.J. Gudlaugsson, Gerard Ter Borch, The Hague 1959-60, vol. II, pp. 224-5, no. 258, reproduced).
