Catalogue Note
The technique of painting portraits on vaulted copper plates was much used by Schilbach for providing a more dramatic and three dimensional effect of the portrayed. Another example of this technique by the artist is the Portrait of Lothar Franz von Schönborn, in the Schönborn collection, Vienna (inv. no. G137).
Schilbach worked mainly in Vienna, although he was also active portraying the nobility in Germany. The present portrait was probably painted shortly before or after the Habsburg Charles was crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1611 in Frankfurt.
