Catalogue Note
This pair of portraits are comtemporary copies after signed and 1628-dated works on panel by Paulus Moreelse (1571-1638), of which the Portrait of Ernst van Reede is in Slot Zuylen, Oud Zuilen (inv. no. S165), and the Portrait of his wife (as unidentified sitter), now lost, was in the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, Berlin (see E. Domela Nieuwenhuis, Paulus Moreelse (1571-1638), diss. 2001, vol. II, p. 477-9).
Although Domela Nieuwenhuis already suspected that both portraits by Moreelse could be considered as a pair, this could never be proofed. The appearance of the present pair of portraits, however, confirms the identification of the lady as Elisabeth van Utenhove. The present pair of portraits was probably commissioned by the family itself.
