Circle of Pieter Coecke van Aelst

Many versions of this composition exist, almost all of them can be dated to 1527-50, including one in the Musée Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (inv. no. 1393; see M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, vol. XII, Leiden 1975, p. 36, cat. no. 151, reproduced plate 80). According to Friedländer none of these are autograph, but it was apparently a popular composition in view of the numerous replicas.
