Catalogue Note
Schäufelin probably worked in Albrecht Dürer’s workshop in Nuremberg circa 1503/4, whose influence can mostly be seen in Schäufelin’s early graphic work. Around 1507 Schäufelin left Nuremberg, to travel amongst others in Tirol, to return in Augsburg in 1510, where he was active both as a painter and as a designer of woodcuts.
As the paint layer is severely damaged, the execution seems to be somewhat unfamiliar for the artist. The quality of the painting can, however, still be recognized in the underdrawing in the faces of both the figures, the architectural sculptures upper left, and the gallipot held by the right figure.
On the basis of digital images Dr. Christof Metzger does not accept the attribution to Schäufelin, pointing out that he rejects a number of signed and dated pictures in his recent catalogue raisonné on the artist.
