- a sumputuous still life with a lobster in a wan-li bowl,a herring on a silver plate, grapes, peaches, and figs in a wan-li bowl, a lemon in a roemer, pumpkins, a pomegranate, together with oysters and crabs, all on a stone ledge in a landscape

Catalogue Note
Originally trained as a goldsmith by his father, Jan Pauwel Gillemans the Elder later specialized as a still-life painter in Antwerp. He became a member of the local guild of St. Luke in 1647/8. In 1648 he married Paulina Uyt den Eeckhout and they had eight children of whom Jan Pauwel the Younger (1651-c.1708) also became a still-life painter. The Elder's compositions show stylistic influences of works by Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-before 1684), who was working in Antwerp from around 1632 until circa 1660 and again from 1672 until his death.
A comparable composition of a Still life with a lobster and fruit in wan-li bowls was sold London, Sotheby's, 18 February 1987, lot 43 (as by Joris van Son).
