Catalogue Note
It is hard to imagine that the painter of austerely monochromatic marines such as this was also the painter of lavish Pronk still lifes of tables laden with fruit and precious objects. His marines are remarkably consistent, and hardly ever deviate from a consistent formula. Nearly all of them show small Dutch inshore vessels such as the ones seen here, beating towards a stiff breeze coming from the left, usually with a distant town or church in the centre horizon (see H.-U. Beck, Künstler um Jan van Goyen, Doornspijk 1991, vol. IV, pp. 32-3, nos. 34-55, most reproduced).
