Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Professor Dr. Marcel R. Roethlisberger for endorsing the attribution to Breenbergh on the basis of a photograph. In his opinion this is an early work by the artist datable to circa 1630.

Breenbergh painted the subject of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath more often such as a landscape in the Institut NĂ©erlandais, Frits Lugt collection, Paris, also dated by Roethlisberger circa 1630, and another one, signed and dated 1656, in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg (see M.R. Roethlisberger, Bartholomeus Breenbergh, The Paintings, Berlin/New York 1981, p. 57, cat. no. 127 and p. 91, cat. no. 236, both reproduced).

Inscribed with an old inventory number on the reverse: No26.
