Catalogue Note
We are grateful to Professor Dr. Marcel R. Roethlisberger for endorsing the attribution to Breenbergh on the basis of a photograph. In his opinion this is an early work by the artist datable to circa 1630.
Breenbergh painted the subject of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath more often such as a landscape in the Institut Néerlandais, Frits Lugt collection, Paris, also dated by Roethlisberger circa 1630, and another one, signed and dated 1656, in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg (see M.R. Roethlisberger, Bartholomeus Breenbergh, The Paintings, Berlin/New York 1981, p. 57, cat. no. 127 and p. 91, cat. no. 236, both reproduced).
Inscribed with an old inventory number on the reverse: No26.
