Frans de Momper Antwerp 1603 - 1660

Frans de Momper became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1629. In 1646 he moved to The Hague and was recorded two years later in Haarlem. Here he came in contact with the work of Jan van Goyen and his circle. De Momper was influenced by this throughout the rest of his career. 

The present painting was made in De Momper's Haarlem period in view of its subject, sketchy approach, and thinly applied paint. The Antwerp panel, however, points out that it might have been painted on his return to Antwerp after 1654.
