Catalogue Note

The present scene is an unusual depiction of the trial of Christ. After having been condemned by the high priest Caiaphas, who tore his robes and exclaimed: 'Blasphemy' (Matt. 26:57-68), Christ was sent to Herod (Luke 23: 8-12). In this scene Christ is depicted standing for Herod, as Caiaphas is seated to the left, his upper jacket partly torn.
