Follower of Quinten Massijs, early 17th Century

The prototype for the male figure can be found in the painting The ill-matched lovers by Massijs (1456-1530) in the National Gallery of Art, Washington (inv. no. 1971.55.1). There are several versions of the present composition recorded, such as the one recorded with Lange, Stuttgart in 1937. None of these, however, can be attributed to Quinten or his son Jan Massijs (1509-1575), who also used similar themes in his paintings.
