Catalogue Note
Sorgh specialized in market scenes and barn interiors, and occasionally, genre-like portraits. This hofje is characteristically intimate and informal, both in its composition and in the treatment of the subject.
According to Houbraken, Hendrick Martensz. Sorgh was a pupil of David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) and Willem Pietersz. Buytewech (1591/2-1624). In 1633 he married in Rotterdam and was also appointed market-boatman which he remained for the rest of his life.
