We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer for suggesting an attribution to Jan van den Hecke on the basis of photographs.

Van den Hecke became a member of the Antwerp Guild in 1642. His banquet still lifes are often assigned to Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1683/4), in many cases with an altered signature. Most of these scenes date from the 1640s, which also seems plausible for the present painting.
