Catalogue Note

The pen work seen here is similar to that in drawings by Agostino such as the Madonna and Child, also formerly in the Calando collection, which was sold, New York, Sotheby's, 26 January 2000, lot 21 and also in the Seated Figure of Christ, in Stockholm (see Per Bjurström, Drawings from the Age of the Carracci, exhib. cat., Oxford, Ashmolean Museum, 2002, cat. no. 22). The sybil is certainly part of a wall decoration, the male figure perhaps from a battle scene.
