Catalogue Note
The subject and the style of this delightful sheet with its dramatic image of a rearing horse is characteristic of Pordenone's interest in foreshortening and in forceful and powerful images. Although it is difficult to connect it with any surviving work by the artist, it is easy to imagine he could have used such a figure in any number of his projects, as, for example, in a façade decoration such as that of the Palazzo d'Anna (circa 1535), where he uses his skill to the full to create illusionistic effects.
